My name is Torrie. I became familiar with your artwork through multiple visits to a set of boxcars on a overgrown stretch of railroad about half an hour from my hometown. After doing much research, I was pleased to discover a bit about you.
I have walked up and down these boxcars many times, and pondered upon the meanings of your words. Something draws me to trains, I don't know what or why. The inner cavities of the empty boxcars are one of very few places where I experience a calm. On days when life looms overwhelming, these empty cars are a place to go.
After spending many years working for a railroad, can you explain to me why the railroad would seemingly abandon a chain of boxcars for a lengthy period of time? The boxcars that I speak of in this blog have been sitting for over a year now, and perhaps much longer.
I wanted to let you now that you will be also participating with a portrait you did in 2000 of Dragonfly dream. She was very kind to send me a copy of it for this exhibition.
This is the work I am talking about: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_A1F77XjV2q8/RjCNIcEFscI/AAAAAAAAAGc/LQ1zodzDz9w/s1600-h/scan0023.jpg
Also, I plan to publish a catalog with all the received works. I would like to send you a copy of it. I wonder if this snail-mail address I found on one of the webpages where yr works were on display is still valid: 153 Ludlow, nr. 6, New York, N.Y. USA?
Location: Surrealville, Principality of buZ, United States
I'm a retired railroad man who indulged in the folk art tradition of making chalk drawings on the railcars as an announcement of presence, and diversion from boredom. Although against the rules of the railroad, it was a common enough practice by the employees and hobos, by ignoring enforcement it was de facto tacit approval, for I dispatched drawings for 32 years of my 41 years of employment without interference. The initial purpose of this blog is to record the language used in my frequent boxcar icon dispatches.
